In order to reduce the number of athletes in the MHSAA regional and finals races and comply with CDC guidelines for preventing the spread of Covid-19, this year we had a Pre-Regional race, splitting the 16 team region in half, with 8 teams competing in separate locations to advance 4 of the teams from each race to the MHSAA regional next week (10/31). Our Pre-Regional was held at Hudson Mills Metro Park yesterday.
The Plymouth girls cross country team was focused and ready for the competitive race, feeling fairly confident about ending up in the top 4 teams but wanting a loftier result. The course is a challenging one but the girls were prepared to take on the challenge.
Lauren Kiley (jr) went out fast and finished in the top spot with Londyn Swenson (sr) in 4th and Sarah Coyne (jr) in 7th and freshman Aliya Kurian in 9th to give Plymouth a huge scoring advantage. Mariella Ma completed the 5-athlete scoring grid in 21st place, giving Plymouth 1st place and 42 points. Sasha Fox (jr) and Claudia Swenson (fr) were close behind rounding out the 7 person team for Plymouth in 26th and 27th place.
Finish times for the Lady Wildcats:
Lauren Kiley 18:34
Londyn Swenson 19:29
Sarah Coyne 19:43
Aliya Kurian 20:16
Mariella Ma 20:52
Sasha Fox 21:21
Claudia Swenson 21:26
Coach Ahearn commented, “I was super proud of the girls’ performances today. We feel pretty confident about our path to states but don’t want to settle for just making it to states this year. Our plans are bigger than that. We want to end up in the top 10 teams at the race and we have to push hard for that to happen. We have had to change up the way we train a bit this year due to the virus precautions but the girls have responded well. These next 2 weeks will be just as challenging as the whole season has been but we will approach it the way we have for the past few months; step by step.”
