Multiple Teams · Free Heart Checks at Plymouth High School by Beaumont Health Systems

On Saturday, January 31, high-school-aged students will have the opportunity to participate in a FREE cardiac screening through Beaumont Health Systems.

Students who are 13 to 18 years old may participate in the Student Heart Check.  Students do not have to attend Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, nor do they need to play sports, to be eligible for this service.

This program combines a simple health history and noninvasive screening to look for signs of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). This is a serious heart condition that is the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes. HCM affects approximately one in 500 people, and does not usually have any symptoms.

Beaumont is offering this free screening to high school students on January 31 from 9 AM until 5 PM. The event will be held at Plymouth High School.

Students will undergo a quick screening that will include a review of the health history questionnaire that can be found on Beaumont’s website. Please complete this, and any other necessary forms, before your scheduled screening time. They will also have their blood pressure checked, an electrocardiogram (ECG), and an echocardiogram (quick look) will be
performed. A written report of the findings will be provided at the end of the screening and can be shared with your child and your family physician.

To participate in the Student Heart Check program, please visit to download and complete the necessary paperwork and return it with your child on the day of the screening. If forms are missing or incomplete, we will be unable to screen your child.

Forms include:
1. completed student/family history questionnaire signed by both a parent and the student
2. program consent form signed by a parent
3. Beaumont photo consent (optional)
4. media consent form (optional)

The data collected may be used by researchers at Beaumont to add to the scientific knowledge of sudden cardiac arrest in young athletes. The data will be reported anonymously. Student privacy and confidentiality will be maintained.

Registration for the screening is required. To register, please call 1-800-328-8542 or visit
